The GTe Urban Ash debuts a new body shape that’s sure to inspire players of all skill levels with its compact frame, accommodating feel, and robust acoustic voice. The GT (Grand Theater) features a scaled-down body that echoes the jumbo curves of our Grand Orchestra shape, with its dimensions reduced to create a remarkably approachable feel. The innovation extends to the GT’s interior architecture, built on a new asymmetrical bracing design called C-Class bracing. This new sonic structure brings the tonal benefits of V-Class bracing to the smaller GT body shape, producing more volume and longer sustain while also bolstering the GT’s bass response to surprising levels of low-end power from a smaller guitar. This model takes its name from the solid Urban Ash that composes its back and sides, which serve up a rich, shimmering midrange accented by pristine highs. Visually, the GT is appointed with modest details such as a three-ring koa rosette and Pinnacle inlays in Italian acrylic, preserving its accessible price point and clean aesthetic. A super-thin, water-based matte finish, paired with an Urban Sienna stain for the back and sides, reflects a dusky, alluring visual character, preserving the wood’s visual texture and allowing the player to feel the grain through the finish. Onboard ES2 electronics provide quick plug-and-play functionality when you need amplified sound. This model includes a sturdy, lightweight AeroCase™ for easy, safe transport.
Our use of Urban Ash, also known as Shamel or evergreen ash, reflects Taylor’s commitment to finding more sustainable, responsible ways to source tonewoods from within our local region. This ash is supplied by West Coast Arborists, Inc., a company that provides tree maintenance and management services to cities across California. Trees that eventually need to be removed due to age, safety concerns and other factors traditionally have had very little end-of-life market value. Our use of Urban Ash can create more value for these trees and support efforts to re-green city infrastructure.
Tonally, Urban Ash’s properties—comparable to high-quality Honduran mahogany—make it a strong contender as a high-grade guitar wood of the future. With its focused, fundamental-strong voice, it produces clean notes mostly free of ringing overtones—the note you play is the note you’ll hear. This makes it supremely adaptable to the particular style of the player. Compared to the “swamp” ash used by electric guitar makers, this species is heavier, denser and more resonant, but not nearly as heavy as the Northern ash used for baseball bats.
Goes Well With: Fingerstyle players seeking an articulate sound unclouded by overtones, or generalists looking for an all-purpose sound that can be moulded to perform across genres and styles. It’s also a versatile tonewood option for singer-songwriters and players looking to cut through a mix with a group of musicians.
