Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) wrote two sonatas for violin and piano at opposite ends of his life, and they portray two very different sides of this great composer. The first sonata, in A major, is lovely and calm, despite occasional unrest, and is considered one of Fauré’s three early masterworks. The second sonata, in E minor, was written 40 years later when Fauré was deaf. The melodies are less clear, the harmonies sharper, and there is far greater use of counterpoint. Despite the fact that it is harder to approach, however, it is as much a masterpiece as the first. Both sonatas are included in this edition.
