One of the great joys of playing any instrument is to make music with friends. The aim of The Young Violinist’s Repertoire four-book series of violin and piano duets (all of which are available from Waltons) is to provide a varied repertoire for young instrumentalists to play together.  Book 3 presents pieces of moderate difficulty (around ABRSM Grades 2-4) that give plenty of scope for development of the bow arm, introduce spiccato and require some finesse of execution. There is also ample opportunity for the introduction of vibrato. The first ten pieces are in first position, enabling the player to master the basics of a sound technique before undertaking the crucial step to third position ('Maytime' and 'Bulgarian Dance' are entirely in third position). This should prepare the ground for players as they tackle their larger scale works, as they will already have met many of the techniques and playing styles that these will require.
