Boogie-Woogie is said to have developed as a musical entertainment in the saloon bars of Louisiana and Mississippi. It reached a peak in the late 1930s and early 1940s, when its most famous exponents (including Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson) made their classic recordings. Those who try to develop their own boogie piano playing quickly discover the technical difficulties of maintaining a mobile and rhythmic left-hand figuration while also giving thought to what their right hand is playing. In Boogie Duets by Mike Cornick, this task is thankfully shared, and players also have the opportunity to improvise.
