Written in 1720 but only published in 1802, Johann Sebastian Bach’s six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin (BWV 1001-1006) are towering works of the violin repertoire but were largely ignored even after publication until the celebrated violinist Joseph Joachim started performing them. Today, they are an essential part of the violin repertoire and are frequently performed and recorded.
