“Active music-making Active participation in musical games and in other pleasurable musical experiences is fundamental to the child’s acquisition of musical knowledge, understanding and skill. The curriculum emphasises active responses and music-making at all levels.” (from Dept of Education Music Primary Curriculum). Here is a link to the Primary School curriculum for your convenience.
The research into the benefits to children from listening to, singing, and playing music is irrefutable. The Dept of Education’s policies fully endorse this and make music a non-optional and important part of the child’s education. We are here to help.
To encourages Primary Schools in their music endeavours Waltons, in conjunction with The National Concert Hall and Lyric FM, run an annual competition where 6 finalist Primary Schools get to perform in the National Concert hall and the winners take home a large voucher for Musical Instruments for their School. If a teacher is having a problem with the Music programme in their school, Waltons can help by sending a music teacher into your school and either working with the teacher to develop the course or by working directly with the children. If you would like help or advice email info@waltonsmusic.ie with your details and we will contact you to see how we can help.
Waltons carry a fine range of recorders, tin whistles and percussion instruments for Primary Schools and can give you help and advice on these instruments Either email info@waltonsmusic.ie or call (01) 820 7425 . We also have a range of helpful books for learning these instruments and other classroom musical activities.
The tin whistle and recorder are recommended as Primary school instruments due to the relative ease of playing and it gives the child an understanding of melody and playing together with others. Tin whistles are a little easier for younger children as they can suit smaller hands. Waltons make a “mello D” whistle which is short and easier to blow. Percussion in the classroom is used to develop children’s rhythm as well as learning to keep time with other students. There are a large number of percussion instruments and it can be hard to decide which to work with in a classroom. Sometimes “less is more” is a good guide. It is easy to control several of a smaller number of types of instrument and weaker kids can be helped by stronger, than too much variation. However fun is the central theme here! Lots of good books available.
“I have personally been stunned in the Walton Music for Schools Competition Finals Performance at what teachers and pupils have achieved. Watching the finals has given me some of the most enjoyable hours entertainment of my life because of the joy of watching and listening to children discovering the joys of playing music together. I believe both pupils and teachers should watch what can be achieved. “If you can’t see it you can’t be it!” Niall Walton. Managing Director. Waltons Music
